A report by consultants Baringa suggests that data centres in Ireland could play a crucial role in the development of offshore wind projects. If Ireland meets its current offshore wind targets, the country could generate up to 55% more electricity than needed from intermittent renewables. This excess power could be utilized by data centres, which have a consistent demand for electricity. According to Dr. Mark Turner, a partner with Baringa, data centres could provide the revenue certainty needed to attract investment and build projects. However, this would require the government to invest in the grid and provide regulatory certainty on grid connections.
