NTT DOCOMO Selects AWS for Nationwide 5G Open RAN Deployment in Japan

February 26, 2024
On February 26, 2024, in Tokyo, Japan, Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, announced its collaboration with NTT DOCOMO, INC., Japan's leading mobile operator with over 89 million subscribers, for the commercial deployment of a nationwide 5G Open Radio Access Network (RAN) in Japan. This partnership aims to address the growing digital economy's demands and the increased mobile communication traffic, which has risen 15.4 times in the past decade. DOCOMO will utilize AWS's Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service Anywhere (Amazon EKS Anywhere) to streamline its 5G Open RAN operations, enhancing network efficiency and integration with AWS services. Additionally, AWS supports DOCOMO in developing a resilient, flexible, and energy-efficient 5G Core on AWS in a hybrid cloud environment, aiming to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters. This effort includes a series of proofs-of-concept (PoCs) started in 2022, which demonstrated a 72% reduction in power consumption for 5G Core in DOCOMO's lab environment. The collaboration extends to Project Kuiper, Amazon's low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband network, to enhance connectivity in rural and disaster-affected areas of Japan. AWS announced a significant investment plan of 2.26 trillion yen into its Tokyo and Osaka cloud infrastructure by 2027 to support Japan's digital transformation and meet the rising demand for cloud services.
