November 15, 2023
On November 14, 2023, in San Francisco and Bangkok, Thailand, during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Meeting, the Royal Thai Government and Google announced a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing Thailand's digital competitiveness and fostering artificial intelligence (AI) innovation. This collaboration is founded on a four-pillar agreement focusing on increasing digital infrastructure investments, encouraging secure and responsible AI adoption in public services, implementing cloud-first policies, and improving digital skills accessibility for Thais. Google's commitment includes exploring the establishment of a new Google data center in Thailand and confirming the location of its first cloud region in Bangkok, which is expected to contribute over US$4.1 billion to the local GDP and support the creation of 50,300 jobs by 2030. Additionally, the partnership will accelerate AI development and application across various sectors, with Google Cloud and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) leveraging generative AI for public services. Google will also share its policy expertise and Secure AI Framework to ensure responsible AI progress, while engaging in cyber threat information exchange and capability building to safeguard against cybercrime. This initiative builds on Google's 12-year history of investments in Thailand, which supported over 250,000 jobs and generated an estimated US$4.3 billion in economic benefits to local businesses in 2022 alone.
