Microsoft Doubles Azure Cloud Capacity in Germany to Meet Rising Demand by Early 2024
Microsoft has announced a significant expansion of its Azure Cloud capacity in Germany, planning to double it by early 2024 to meet rising customer demand. This expansion is centered in the Frankfurt am Main area, within the Germany, West Central region. This move is in response to the needs of customers like Bayer, Mercedes-Benz, or Siemens, supporting their growth and innovation goals in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). The expansion not only reaffirms Microsoft's commitment to fostering digital innovation among both large and small to medium-sized businesses in Germany but also aims to provide the infrastructure necessary for success in the AI age. Marianne Janik, Chairwoman of the Management Board of Microsoft Germany, highlighted the importance of powerful cloud and AI solutions for a strong economy. The expansion responds to the increasing investment in cloud solutions by over 50% of German companies in 2023, as reported by the Bitkom Cloud Report 2023, with a significant number planning to expand their cloud usage in the next five years. Microsoft's efforts also cater to the needs of customers in highly regulated industries, offering data storage and processing within Germany. Examples of innovation leveraging Microsoft's Azure Cloud include Siemens introducing the Siemens Industrial Copilot, based on Azure OpenAI Service, and Mercedes-Benz connecting its global car plants via the MO360 Data Platform to the Microsoft Cloud. These initiatives underline the strategic importance of the German Azure regions as central, secure high-performance sites in Europe, driving the need for accelerated expansion to cater to both German and global demand.
