Microsoft Expands Its First Italian Cloud Region to Support Digital Innovation, November 2023
On November 22, 2023, Microsoft confirmed its commitment to support Italy's digital innovation by expanding its first Italian cloud region. The cloud region, launched last summer, offers scalable, secure, and resilient cloud services to meet the needs of public and private companies for local data residency. Microsoft's Italian cloud region is set to rapidly grow and become one of the most significant cloud infrastructures in Europe in the coming years. The expansion was announced during a visit by Jean Philippe Courtois, Executive Vice President and President, National Transformation Partnerships Microsoft, along with national and local institutional representatives. The Italian cloud region is part of Microsoft's over 60 cloud regions worldwide and will soon become one of the largest of the 17 data center regions in Europe. Microsoft's new generation cloud regions, like the Italian one, are designed according to sustainability and circular economy principles, reflecting Microsoft's commitment to zero impact. By 2030, Microsoft will be carbon negative, and by 2050, it will remove all the carbon emissions it has emitted since its founding in 1975, including the activities of its data centers. By 2025, the company will switch to 100% renewable energy supply, meaning it will have green energy purchasing contracts for 100% of the electricity consumed by all its data centers. Globally, Microsoft's cloud regions reuse 78% of end-of-life components, and the remaining 22% of materials are recycled. Microsoft is reducing the use of cooling water in its data centers and estimates that it will use water to cool the Italian data center for less than 5% of the days of the year.
