On January 19, 2024, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced its plan to invest 2.26 trillion yen in its cloud infrastructure in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan, by 2027 to cater to the increasing demand for cloud services in the region. This investment is expected to contribute 5.57 trillion yen to Japan's GDP and support an average of 30,500 full-time equivalent jobs annually in local businesses. AWS's total investment in Japan's cloud infrastructure will reach approximately 3.77 trillion yen by 2027, building on the 1.51 trillion yen invested from 2011 to 2022. The company, which opened its first office in Japan in 2009 and launched AWS Regions in Tokyo in 2011 and Osaka in 2021, has significantly contributed to Japan's GDP and job market through its data center operations. AWS's investments are aimed at bolstering Japan's digital and industrial competitiveness by enhancing digital workforce development, AI, and renewable energy, thereby creating local jobs, improving productivity, and accelerating innovation. AWS also supports the local and international partner community through the AWS Partner Network, which includes 100,000 independent software vendors and systems integrators, covering all 47 prefectures in Japan. Furthermore, AWS is focusing on accelerating generative AI innovation in Japan, with the general availability of Amazon Bedrock announced in the AWS Asia Pacific (Tokyo) Region in October 2023, and the development of diverse and industry-specific large language models.
